Producers sweet on citrus packing plant

The Advocate (Perth) - - NEWS -

AGRICULTURE and Food Minister Alannah MacTiernan officially opened WA’s largest citrus packing facility in Bindoon last week.

The Moora Citrus Packers shed includes advanced packing technology, which has been co-funded through a State Government grant to deliver high-quality citrus fruits to premium export markets.

Fruit producers from across the region will be able to use the facility to pack, cool, inspect, load and seal containers straight to port to allow access for export markets with strict security protocols.

The facility is set to generate 15 long-term jobs in Bindoon – as well as another 60 jobs in the service and supply chain.

Ms MacTiernan said citrus exports has gone from 500 tonnes in 2015 to 3000 tonnes so far this year and were expected to double by next year.

“Western Australians know the quality of our local citrus and now it’s time we took that premium produce to the world,” she said.

‘This is a fantastic example of the State Government co-investment helping to drive new opportunities for our horticultural industry.”
