LOCAL MP Jessica Shaw is concerned that a lack of fully licensed MRI services at St John of God Midland Public Hospital is affecting people living in Ellenbrook and the Hills.
The Swan Hills member said unlike other areas in Perth, patients using the hospital could not access the full range of MRI services under Medicare after significant cuts to its funding by the Federal Government.
Ms Shaw called on the Federal Government to act urgently on the issue.
“It’s completely unacceptable that people in Ellenbrook and the Hills do not have full Medicare access to MRI services at the local SJOG Midland Public Hospital,” she said
“My constituents have to pay up to $1000 per scan for some services.
“If they are able to travel to Royal Perth, Fremantle, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital or the Joondalup Health Campus, those same scans would be covered by Medicare. A lot of people in this area are doing it tough; many simply can’t afford to pay for these services.”
Pearce MHR Christian Porter said access to affordable and quality health care was incredibly important.
“We (the Federal Government) are investing an extra $2 billion into diagnostic imaging over the next decade,” he said. “Importantly, a review will be undertaken into the provision of MRI licences across the country.”
