Ja­son raises the bar

ELMAR’S in the Val­ley bar­tender Ja­son Macgill is get­ting U.G.L.Y to help beat blood can­cer.

The bar­tender is hop­ing to take out the ti­tle of U.G.L.Y bar­tender of the year af­ter al­ready rais­ing $1500 to­wards the cause.

The fundrais­ing com­pe­ti­tion asks bar­tenders to demon­strate their Un­der­stand­ing, Gen­er­ous, Like­able You by rais­ing money for the Leukaemia Foun­da­tion’s vi­tal ac­com­mo­da­tion ser­vice.

Mr Macgill said he de­cided to take part this year as a way to give back and help those liv­ing with leukaemia.

“I signed up for the first time this year and we’ve raise more than $1000 for peo­ple with blood can­cer,” he said.

“Our pa­trons have been so sup­port­ive, they have hap­pily do­nate their change to the cause and given gen­er­ously at the events we have held.”

He said a few dol­lars went a long way. “A bit of loose change may not mean much to every­one, but when do­nated it can add up and make a big dif­fer­ence,” he said

Since it started nine years ago, the fundraiser has raised $10 mil­lion. Leukaemia Foun­da­tion fundrais­ing cam­paigns man­ager Naz El­lat said ev­ery $80 raised would fund one night’s ac­com­mo­da­tion for a pa­tient and their carer while they ac­cess treat­ment.

“Across Aus­tralia our ded­i­cated U.G.L.Y bar­tender en­trants have al­ready raised $735,000,” she said.
