Guilty plea for mayor attacker

The Advocate (Perth) - - NEWS -

A PENSIONER convicted of attacking the City of Swan mayor with a microphone after an electors meeting pleaded guilty in a Midland court last week.

Warren John Jeater appeared in Midland Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with assaulting a person performing a public function and unlawful damage.

The 67-year-old was accused of hitting Mayor David Lucas over the head with a microphone that left him with a bloody 2cm wound above the eye and broken glasses.

Jeater entered pleas of guilty to both charges, with his lawyer requesting the matter be postponed so a pre-sentence report could be prepared.

His lawyer said the allegations were “quite serious” and that given his client had “some history” of criminal damage, he sought a six-week adjournment.

Magistrate Kevin Tavener granted the adjournment and reminded Jeater that he was on bail and to not get himself in any trouble.

As he left court, Jeater placed his finger to his mouth to signal ‘no comment’ to questions directed at him by journalists.

He is due to be sentenced in Midland Magistrates Court on September 27.
