Peter Birtles is hardly a household name, even for devoted readers of the financial press. But the chief executive of Super Retail, the Brisbane-based conglomerate that owns Supercheap Auto, Rebel Sports and a range of other outdoor retail chains, has been steadily building up one of the country’s largest and best-performing retail organisations since he took over seven years ago.

The nation faces some important economic challenges but, operating quietly under the radar, are a growing range of innovative, agile, up-and-coming companies led by executives looking to build businesses for the Australia of today and tomorrow, not yesterday. The Deal has chosen Birtles as its 2013 chief executive of the year. See if you agree.

Closer to home, The Deal magazine has been given a new, classier look. Almost five years after it was launched, The Australian’s monthly business magazine has been redesigned with some new features and a more stylish approach to layout, graphics and photography.

One of Australia’s most experienced magazine designers, Samantha Yates, has risen to the challenge of transforming The Deal into a world-class magazine.

The new-look Deal also includes some fresh features such as Deal Tech, Executive travel, Wealth, Q&A. And a quirky column called Last Call ...
