BAUME & MERCIER’S CAPELAND COBRA, IN TRIBUTE TO DRIVER AND DESIGNER CARROLL SHELBY, IS A LITTLE RACING CAR ON YOUR WRIST
It’s no secret that men and precise machinery go together like a horse and carriage. Or better still lots of horsepower and a vintage car. The fact is, males never really outgrow our love of toys, our tastes just get more sophisticated. As boys, we lusted over the perfect Lego set or billy cart. As men, our appreciation may be as much for the smooth sweeping second hand of a mechanical watch or the purr of a well-tuned engine.
Baume & Mercier have cleverly covered both bases with a new partnership forged between their popular Capeland watch and the legendary Shelby Cobra. The two-seater sports roadster is the brainchild of Carroll Shelby, a Texan racer, whose greatest claim to fame was earned not on the track but at the drawing board.
Shelby created one of the enduring icons of American automotive history with the cobra logo and thick racing stripes bisecting the car. The marriage of an agile English chassis and a big Ford V8 was a phenomenally successful one. The Shelby Cobra, with its combination of sleek lines, brutish heart and sporty stripes on a guardsmanblue body, has cemented its place in automotive and popular culture. Genuine Cobras are rarely sold, and when they are they fetch astronomical prices, ensuring they remain out of the reach of mere mortals.
Baume & Mercier are celebrating Shelby’s life and achievements with a Cobra-inspired reimagining of their flagship Capeland chronograph. The big 44mm watch has been given an automotive detailing, the chronograph subdials are modelled after fuel gauges, and the shape of the hands takes its inspiration from the Cobra’s steering wheel. The seconds hand is counterweighted by the Shelby Cobra insignia.
All this is set against a blue sunray finished dial split down the middle by a subtle matte racing stripe. $5690
