While the Roman jewellery house of Bulgari may be better known for its shimmering serpents, its horological creations have graced the wrists of the rich and famous since 1975. One of the brand’s most iconic designs is the Octo, an octagonal watch comprised chiefly of straight lines and facets – 110 of them – which this year is showing off a dark side, courtesy of the Ultranero collection. The 41mm case is treated with a black diamondlike carbon finish, which, thanks to its ultra-hard and scratch-resistant properties, promises to be as tough as it looks.

Uninterrupted black runs the risk of coming off as monotonous. But paired with pink gold, as it is here, suddenly the black seems richer and the gold more intensely lustrous. It’s this classic combination that elevates the Octo Ultranero chronograph to a higher plane of beauty, the pink gold hour markers and hands appearing to float on the polished lacquer dial, surrounded by a finely brushed gold bezel that adds a suitably Italianate opulence.
