Con­trary to pop­u­lar be­lief, the ap­ple pie didn’t orig­i­nate in Amer­ica. In fact, the first writ­ten ap­ple pie recipe dates back to 1381 in Eng­land, to the time of poet Geoffrey Chaucer. The in­gre­di­ents listed in­cluded “good” ap­ples, “good” spices, figs, raisins and pears in a “co­fyn” - a pas­try cas­ing. Saf­fron was used for flavour­ing the fill­ing, which didn’t in­clude any sugar.
