What started as a small, local ice carving competition in a city in north-east China has grown into the biggest and most dazzling winter festival in the world. The Harbin Ice Festival showcases castles of ice and maidens made from snow. About 180,000 cubic metres of ice is used to build the temporary city, where temperatures can fall below -350C. Ice bricks are cut from the frozen Songhua River then painstakingly sculpted into dazzling works of art.
