Platitudes on China
Labor is in trouble when Chris Bowen’s lightweight speech is praised. As Greg Sheridan says (12/10), instead of incisive analysis and deep insights, Bowen wheels out banalities and platitudes on a crucial and complex topic. Canberra is rightly cautious on China’s “one belt, one road” while Bowen is vague.
DFAT head Frances Adamson is right to tell Chinese students here that we won’t cop anyone being silenced in our society. Adamson, unlike Bowen, is clear eyed about China’s proneness to improper winat-all-costs behaviour. Arthur Giannopoulos, Mitcham, SA
