Rather than get all defensive about the Acting Prime Minister’s claim that the May budget will contain some goodies from Scott “Santa Claus” Morrison, the Treasurer should declare that his only KPI is to earn the nickname “Scrooge”.

As if students as young as eight don’t get enough at school already! NAPLAN preparation classes have been held in libraries and swimming centres in Sydney over the school holidays. This is clear evidence that DA-PLAN is not working!

Ken Johnston, Rochedale South, Qld

With the Middle East unstable due to events in Syria and Israel, a standoff in the South China Sea, concerns about structural reform to our tax system and the ongoing argument about business taxes, what do the Greens contribute? They want to legalise weed. At least we can now understand how they came up with their recent policy offerings.

Andrew Weeks, Renmark, SA

If Labor wants to get its rank and file back it needs to represent genuine blue collar issues and not middleclass issues like environment and “man-made climate change”.

Labour needs to get back to bread and butter issues of concern to its supporters such as job security and affordable housing. It should sever links with the Greens, who have nowhere else to go.

Greg Byrne, Wantirna South, Vic

To put climate change denial in further perspective, (Letters, 17/4) even industries excluded from the Paris climate agreement are slashing greenhouse gas emissions (“Shipping industry pact on emissions”, 16/4), so the events of “15,000 years ago” have as much relevance to present day reality as global warming deniers themselves — zero. The immutable transition to a low CO2 emissions future is thus a no-brainer. Chris Roylance, Paddington, Qld

Pete Smith of Brindabella is not playing fair bringing relevant facts of history into the climate change debate. (Letters, 17/4) It’s very upsetting for people who desperately need a cause. Phil Tucker, Hodgson Vale, Qld

The UN now urges Australia to take the refugees from Nauru and Manus before South African farmers. The former are illegal entries, the latter, legitimate entries via a humanitarian visa. The UN should lecture some of its members who are human rights abusers before telling us how to run our border protection policy that is the envy of others nations. John Partridge, Manly, NSW

If morality were a criteria to be US president then I suppose Bill Clinton and JFK would never have been elected (“Trump ‘morally unfit’ for president”, 17/4). Riley Brown, Bondi Beach, NSW
