With Angus Campbell’s appointment we can step up in our part of world

The Australian - - COMMENTARY -

All hail to the incoming Chief of Defence, Lieutenant General Angus Campbell (“Battlefield and boats successes set up Campbell for top job”, 17/4).

Australia is now blessed with a proven military leader, who has been tested and who has achieved where others have fallen aside.

To complement the new team , the Prime Minister now needs to appoint an appropriate Defence Minister. Jim Molan would suit that appointment.

With the imminent arrival of Admiral Harry Harris as the next US ambassador, we have the means to place greater emphasis on the need to step up in our part of the world. Mike Flanigan, Toowoomba, Qld The appointment and promotion of Lieutenant General Angus Campbell as the new Chief of Defence, although predictable, is an outstanding choice. At last we have at the top of the mili- tary a proven, combat-hardened leader who has also proven himself as a performer in political circles.

As a former special forces commander, Campbell has conquered the extremes of physical and mental pressures, but he is also smart, well educated and fearless in his resolve to do what is necessary and what is right. His ethics are of the highest order.

Campbell will protect his people while insisting they meet the highest standards of professionalism. He will be no pushover for politicians either, having been tested in senate estimates many times. John George, Terrigal, NSW
