Trump man slams Downer again
George Papadopoulos, the Donald Trump adviser who sparked the Robert Mueller investigation in the US, has continued to hit out at former Australian high commissioner to Britain Alexander Downer.
In two tweets yesterday, Papadopoulos, who was sentenced to 14 days’ jail for lying to the FBI, repeated accusations that Mr Downer had been involved in a left-wing, pro-Israeli, antiTrump spy conspiracy.
Papadopoulos has accused Mr Downer, a former foreign minister, of illegally recording their May 2016 conversation in the Kensington Wine Bar, during which Papadopoulos allegedly told Mr Downer that the Russians had material detrimental to Hillary Clinton.
Mr Downer allegedly passed on the information to Canberra, and it was then handed to the Americans.
Papadopoulos had been told the Russians had Mrs Clinton’s emails by a Maltese professor, Joseph Mifsud, at a meeting at the Andaz Hotel in London a few weeks before meeting Mr Downer.
But Papadopoulos, who told the Mueller investigation that he could not recall telling Mr Downer anything about the Clinton emails, said in a tweet at the weekend that the meeting with Mr Downer came after an Israeli diplomat, Christian Cantor, introduced him to his “girlfriend”, Erika Thompson.
The Australian revealed in May that Ms Thompson had brokered the Downer meeting with Papadopoulos and she was also at the Kensington Wine Bar meeting.
Papadopoulos said this set-up to the meeting was ‘’bizarre’’.
He tweeted: “Besides the fact that I notified the FBI a year ago about my suspicions that Downer was illegally recording my conversation with him, the leadup to the meeting with Downer in London was even more bizarre.’’
His second tweet reads: “An Israeli diplomat named Christian Cantor, who hated Trump, introduced me to his ‘girlfriend’, who just happened to be an Australian intel officer and assistant to Downer. Named Erika Thompson. After I humiliate David Cameron in the British press, Downer wants to meet.’’
Mr Cantor, a former adviser in the Israel ministry of foreign affairs, was posted to the Israeli embassy in London as a political counsellor in 2012.
Papadopoulos accused Mr Downer last week of being a friend of the Clintons who ignored Australian interests, and was instead trying to uncover Israeli information.
He said: “So basically, for those paying attention, we have a Clinton friend, connected to the MI6, and private intelligence organisations in London, probing me about my ties to the energy business offshore Israel,” he wrote.
“Nothing about the USAustralia relationship.
“Yet I supposedly told THAT individual about emails, something I have no recollection ever discussing.”
The Australian is not suggesting the allegations against Mr Downer or Ms Thompson have any substance, only that they have been made.
Attempts to contact Mr Downer last night were unsuccessful.
