Sporting quandary

The Australian - - COMMENTARY -

What a quandary it puts us in when a brilliant and successful player also demonstrates an unpleasant personality (“Doubling down on the blame game”, 15/9”). We yearn for outstanding sportsmen and women to also represent our own standards. When there is, as in the case of Serena Williams, a disconnect, we are at a loss. We can acknowledge their achievements but not admire them as we would like to. Nothing becomes any great achiever so much as humility and modesty. Williams will be accorded her place in our memory, but it will not be the cherished niche occupied by someone like Roger Federer. Rodger C
