Our roll of honour
BEST CROSS PLATFORM BRAND: Herald Sun
Sponsored by IPSOS
THE Herald Sun was honoured for its commitment to breaking news across a variety of platforms with a new award sponsored by Ipsos MediaCT.
Editor Damon Johnston said the award reflected the newspaper’s core values in breaking news, across all platforms.
“Victorians come to the Herald Sun for their news, sport and entertainment in the morning, afternoon and the evening; through the newspaper, website and mobile phone,” he said.
Judges praised the Melbourne masthead for the brands it created within itself, particularly AFL in such a competitive environment. “It was clear the Herald Sun is really fighting on all fronts to maintain a leadership position, not only against The Age and The Australian, but the AFL, too.
“Crucially, it is complemented by e excellent cellent sports journalism.”
NEWSPAPER OF THE YEAR 90,000+: The Age
Sponsored by NORSKE SKOG
THE Age is a masthead that has undergone many challenges in the past year, like all newspapers, but it has thrived with journalism at its core.
This philosophy of journalism first is what secured the Melbourne daily Newspaper of the Year award.
“You’re always looking to improve the stories that really matter to your community; the ones that capture them and involve them,” The Age editor Andrew Holden said.
“We never lost focus about quality journalism.
“That’s a fundamental for any newspaper.”
The judges agreed, praising the masthead for its ingenuity and resilience in a difficult period.
“Difficult commercial decisions were embraced with confidence by the editorial team,” judges said.

SUNDAY NEWSPAPER OF THE YEAR: Herald
on Sunday Sponsored by NORSKE SKOG
NEW Zealand’s Herald on Sunday has a mantra: the reader doesn’t need you; you have to work to keep them coming back.
Editor Bryce Johns has taken to this idea with both hands, and built a newspaper on the foundations on community spirit. This community spirit keeps the readers coming back.
“It probably sounds negative, but we in print have to accept that the readers no longer need us,” he said.
“There is plenty of competition in print and there are multi ways to access the good stories that we write.”
Judges said the paper’s current and future strategy was bold and impressive, and not built upon technologies, but on a relationship with its community.
