THE Her­ald Sun was hon­oured for its com­mit­ment to break­ing news across a va­ri­ety of plat­forms with a new award spon­sored by Ip­sos Me­di­aCT.

Ed­i­tor Da­mon John­ston said the award re­flected the news­pa­per’s core val­ues in break­ing news, across all plat­forms.

“Vic­to­ri­ans come to the Her­ald Sun for their news, sport and en­ter­tain­ment in the morn­ing, af­ter­noon and the evening; through the news­pa­per, web­site and mo­bile phone,” he said.

Judges praised the Mel­bourne mast­head for the brands it cre­ated within it­self, par­tic­u­larly AFL in such a com­pet­i­tive en­vi­ron­ment. “It was clear the Her­ald Sun is re­ally fight­ing on all fronts to main­tain a lead­er­ship po­si­tion, not only against The Age and The Aus­tralian, but the AFL, too.

“Cru­cially, it is com­ple­mented by e ex­cel­lent cel­lent sports jour­nal­ism.”

THE Age is a mast­head that has un­der­gone many chal­lenges in the past year, like all news­pa­pers, but it has thrived with jour­nal­ism at its core.

This phi­los­o­phy of jour­nal­ism first is what se­cured the Mel­bourne daily News­pa­per of the Year award.

“You’re al­ways look­ing to im­prove the sto­ries that re­ally mat­ter to your com­mu­nity; the ones that cap­ture them and in­volve them,” The Age ed­i­tor An­drew Holden said.

“We never lost fo­cus about qual­ity jour­nal­ism.

“That’s a fun­da­men­tal for any news­pa­per.”

The judges agreed, prais­ing the mast­head for its in­ge­nu­ity and re­silience in a dif­fi­cult pe­riod.

“Dif­fi­cult com­mer­cial de­ci­sions were em­braced with con­fi­dence by the ed­i­to­rial team,” judges said.

NEW Zealand’s Her­ald on Sun­day has a mantra: the reader doesn’t need you; you have to work to keep them com­ing back.

Ed­i­tor Bryce Johns has taken to this idea with both hands, and built a news­pa­per on the foun­da­tions on com­mu­nity spirit. This com­mu­nity spirit keeps the read­ers com­ing back.

“It prob­a­bly sounds neg­a­tive, but we in print have to ac­cept that the read­ers no longer need us,” he said.

“There is plenty of com­pe­ti­tion in print and there are multi ways to ac­cess the good sto­ries that we write.”

Judges said the pa­per’s cur­rent and fu­ture strat­egy was bold and im­pres­sive, and not built upon tech­nolo­gies, but on a re­la­tion­ship with its com­mu­nity.
