Students view political world close-up

- ALICIA NALLY

THE jury is still out on whether a recent trip to Canberra has inspired some Far North students to start a career in politics.

Eleven AFL Cape York House Year 10 and 11 students spent four days in the nation’s capital this week learning about leadership and sacrifice as part of a program with the Australian Defence Force Academy.

Program manager Rick Hanlon said the “fantastic trip” introduced the boys to Australian art, history and politics.

“On Tuesday we went to Parliament House to watch question time and saw a debate about the gun laws,” Mr Hanlon said.

“The questions the boys were asking about what they were debating and why, and the processes, were great to hear.”

The group also met Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and spent time with Indigenous Affairs Scullion.

Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said it was “sensational” to meet the students.

“It’s hard to find a better bunch of confident kids. These kids would stand their own anywhere.”

The trip included a tour of the Australian War Memorial, Australian Institute of Sport, leadership training, obstacle course and a game of AFL against the ADFA Rams. Minister Nigel

AFL Cape York House boarders have been practising their silver service skills as they prepare to host more than 100 businesswomen at a High Tea on Sunday.

The students will be working at the (sold out) Stand Up to Domestic Violence event.
