Skip­per en­ters re­gatta on wave of con­fi­dence

CAIRNS sailor War­ren Innes is putting the fin­ish­ing touches to his prized cata­ma­ran be­fore four days of fierce rac­ing in the Sail Cairns Re­gatta.

Hav­ing com­peted in the event since its in­cep­tion four years ago, Mr Innes said he re­mained un­de­feated in North Queens­land.

The sail­ing and rac­ing se­ries in and around the Cairns In­let and nearby is­lands starts tonight with a brief­ing be­fore rac­ing at 10am to­mor­row.

“We’ve got some strong winds fore­cast for the week­end so it’s go­ing to be ex­cit­ing,” Mr Innes said.

“There’s a lot of skill in­volved in know­ing the right sails to use with the wind con­di­tions and lo­cal knowl­edge comes into play a lot.”

Sail Cairns chair­man Mark Leit­ner said about 12 ves­sels had al­ready nom­i­nated from Cairns, Port Dou­glas, Coral Sea Val­ley, Mackay, Townsville and South Bris­bane.
