Cardiac cyclefest gears up
A GRUELLING three-day cycle from Cairns to Cooktown raises millions for the cardiac services in the Far North.
But for the 300 cyclists, the 11th annual Cardiac Challenge this weekend is also an opportunity to get a front-row seat to outdoor attractions north of the city. The 330km journey allows riders to experience lush rainforest, dry outback and small townships.
Here are some highlights:
DAY 1 – CAIRNS TO MT CARBINE (126.9KM) MT MOLLOY
The historic town, host to mining and timber industries in the 1900s, now boasts a population that numbers around 250.
Riders will stop at the local rodeo grounds, a popular campsite located near the pub.
DAY 2 – MT CARBINE TO LAKELAND (115.6KM) LAKELAND
After a cycle through the dry, outback savanna country, riders will camp at Lakeland Horse Sports.
DAY 3 – LAKELAND TO COOKTOWN (79.4KM) BLACK MOUNTAIN
The national park, southwest of Cooktown, features granite boulders and rocks of significance to Kuku Nyungkal people.
