Car­diac cy­cle­fest gears up

A GRU­ELLING three-day cy­cle from Cairns to Cook­town raises mil­lions for the car­diac ser­vices in the Far North.

But for the 300 cy­clists, the 11th an­nual Car­diac Chal­lenge this week­end is also an op­por­tu­nity to get a front-row seat to out­door at­trac­tions north of the city. The 330km jour­ney al­lows rid­ers to ex­pe­ri­ence lush rain­for­est, dry out­back and small town­ships.

Here are some high­lights:

DAY 1 – CAIRNS TO MT CARBINE (126.9KM) MT MOL­LOY

The his­toric town, host to min­ing and tim­ber in­dus­tries in the 1900s, now boasts a pop­u­la­tion that num­bers around 250.

Rid­ers will stop at the lo­cal rodeo grounds, a pop­u­lar camp­site lo­cated near the pub.

DAY 2 – MT CARBINE TO LAKELAND (115.6KM) LAKELAND

Af­ter a cy­cle through the dry, out­back sa­vanna coun­try, rid­ers will camp at Lakeland Horse Sports.

DAY 3 – LAKELAND TO COOK­TOWN (79.4KM) BLACK MOUN­TAIN

The na­tional park, south­west of Cook­town, fea­tures gran­ite boul­ders and rocks of sig­nif­i­cance to Kuku Nyungkal peo­ple.
