The three R’s of safety

By Jorja Davies, Year 5, Holy Cross School

R, R, R: a pirate’s favourite letter … R – Recognise, React, and Report.

On October 27, Holy Cross School gathered for a walk to remember Daniel Morcombe.

We walked along the highway north and south to pay respect to the Daniel Morcombe family and foundation.

All the children in the school wore red shirts to highlight the Daniel Morcombe message of Recognise, React and Report. Even the staff wore red. Some policemen from Smithfield police station walked with us and helped stop the traffic so we could cross at the crossings.

Everyone was walking happily and then we came to a stop.

We stood along the fence on the highway and waved to the passing cars and trucks and most of them beeped and waved happily.

We had a photo on the little hill and then walked back to school. On December 7, 2003, Daniel went missing on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast and his body wasn’t found until 2011.

His parents decided they needed to keep all the other kids in Australia safe so they decided to start a foundation a few years later.

Daniel’s parents travel all around the country promoting Recognise, React and Report.
