Passion proves a problem for coach

-

with Zenon Caravella WE all know that with Spanish teams and players comes all sorts of flair, tricks and most famously, tiki-taka football.

But something else you can almost guarantee is hot blood – passion in the heat of battle, fire in the belly. A fantastic quality to have, some might say, but something that needs to be used in the right way.

On Sunday night, Wanderers’ Spanish import Oriel Riera was substituted by new coach and compatriot Josep Gombau, who went to shake the player’s hand after exiting the field only to have it slapped away in disgust. It’s a sure test for Gombau’s managerial skills as Oriel is their star striker.

On another topic, finally the Mariners got their just rewards, defeating reigning champions Sydney FC in Gosford.

Anyone who knows Paul Okon knows he has a certain style, one that takes time to bed down and with a high turnover of players recently that job is even more challenging.

Like anything with time, patience and more importantly, the playing group believing in their coach’s philosophy, you can start to see the way this team is developing. With a great mix of youth and experience they will be sure to upset a few more teams this season.

Meanwhile, after years of misery, erratic millionaires and no finals appearances, the Newcastle Jets have finally given their fans something to cheer about, topping the table.

Although it’s early days, it’s exciting to see the brand of football being played.

Ernie Merrick is one of the most successful coaches in the A-League.

An attacking style of play is his mantra, and combined with discipline and organisation, the Jets look the goods so far.
