Trail walk points to great win for charity

HUNDREDS of Far Northerners could take to Mount Whitfield’s scenic walking trails under a proposed new charity event earmarked to begin next year.

Cairns Regional Council is today likely to give in-principle support to “The Arrow Experience”, an initiative of the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation (FNQHF) whereby participants walk the green, blue, red and soon-to-be-complete yellow arrow trails over one morning.

“The number of participants will be capped at 300, which is manageable from an event co-ordination perspective as well as ensuring that the activity does not negatively impact on the walking trails’ condition,” council officers said in a report.

“The event is proposed to have various course options catering for different ages and levels of fitness.

“The event is expected to gain strong community support given the organisation’s previous success with the delivery of local community events ... and the fact that the funds raised will directly benefit the quality of local health care.”

Flagged to be held in June 2018, the event “has the potential” to become an annual fundraiser in the same vein as the popular Relay For Life.

Officers have recommended that the council supports the proposed event.
