‘Missing’ man hunt called off
A SEARCH and rescue operation to find Kuranda man Arek Gwozdz has been called off.
Police have reason to believe that he is “actively avoiding” them.
A search for the 38-year-old started on Monday after he was reported missing to police after failing to return from a bushwalk with a friend on November 12.
A police spokesman said the search and rescue operation was called off at 2.30pm yesterday.
He said police were now looking at a much smaller area where the man is believed to be.
“We think the person of interest might be actively avoiding us,” he said.
“We’ve got an area we’re looking at and we’ll start at first light today.
“The plan is to scale the search back and to give the person the opportunity to come out,” the police spokesman said.
“Also the area is easily accessible ... you can hear the road from the area.”
Police and SES volunteers have been searching in the Black Mountain Rd area.
