MISSION Beach and Cairns have been voted in the top 10 best regional and major Australian destinations, respectively, to visit by the tour- ism website Experience Oz.

The Cassowary Coast hamlet came in at No.2 thanks to its laid-back, tropical vibe.

“It is Mission Beach’s lack of commercialisation ... with a total of four beach villages providing visitors with that isolated, secluded and exclusive feel most yearn for in a tropical getaway,” the website read.

Cairns was the fourth most popular major destination behind the Whitsundays, Mackay and the Kimberley.

Organisers of the annual competition said Cairns had “fast become perhaps Australia’s most popular tropical getaway destination”.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland chief executive Pip Close said the region was a highly aspirational destination with its two World Heritage areas and tropical climate.

“Our cosmopolitan city is fringed by reef and rainforest with the outback less than a day’s drive away, giving visitors an extraordinary choice of scenery and experiences.”
