I AGREE with Su­san Wil­liams (let­ters, 11/11). The sit­u­a­tion on Manus Is­land is spi­ralling.

How did we get to this point where the bru­tal con­di­tions that de­tainees were es­cap­ing are now far less life-threat­en­ing than their cur­rent po­si­tion?

Re­cently leaked footage shows the hor­rific con­di­tions fac­ing th­ese peo­ple.

Truth, fair­ness and due process all out the win­dow.

When did Aus­tralians – ev­ery one of us im­mi­grants ex­cept in­dige­nous peo­ple – be­come so cruel, heart­less and un­car­ing of our global broth­ers and sis­ters?

We need MPs to have the courage to stand up and say no to hu­man rights abuses in­stead of mak­ing mis­guided po­lit­i­cal mileage from peo­ples’ suf­fer­ing. Ch­eryll Koop, White Rock
