AN FFA Cup best is on the horizon for Southside Comets after a 15-0 demolition of JCU Strikers in the opening round of community club fixtures.

Will Monin bagged five goals and Zeca Soares three for the reigning FNQ Football Premier Men’s champions, going on with it after leading 9-0 at halftime.

While the result was expected against the young Strikers, Comets coach Dion Readman said the scoreline Southside 15 d JCU Strikers 0 Rangers 3 d Mareeba 3 (pens) Leichhardt 6 d Douglas Utd 2 Innisfail United v Edge Hill postponed to March 20 was not a reflection of where his side was at after losing several key players post-2017.

“We were OK. (JCU) had a lot of young kids still building to where they can be,” he said.

Readman said in another rebuilding year in 2018, the players were jelling with every game and hoped to achieve their best FFA Cup result.

“We’ve never got past the second round so that’s one of our goals,” he said.

“Obviously our next game will be up against much better opposition, whoever we draw.”

The Comets win was in contrast to the riveting contest in Mareeba, where the home side fought back from 3-0 down to force extra time against Marlin Coast. The Rangers eventually snuck through on penalties.

Leichhardt beat Douglas United to progress to a playoff against Stratford on March 20.
