Home invasion charges
A KURANDA man has fronted court accused of raping a woman during a violent home invasion at Gordonvale.
The man, who cannot be named until he is committed to stand trial, was remanded in custody and matters were adjourned to June 6.
The 21-year-old is facing a number of serious charges including rape, sexual assault, burglary with intent and common assault on December 21.
It is alleged he gained entry to a home about 4am and was spotted by the 26-year-old woman. It will be further alleged that she confronted the intruder which resulted in a physical altercation after which she was assaulted.
Police have confirmed the pair were unknown to each other.
Senior Constable Russ Parker said it had been a priority investigation.
“It was a woman who was in her own home. She didn’t know this person. He’s (allegedly) sexually assaulted her,” Snr Const Parker said.
“It becomes a significant investigation when you’ve got circumstances like that.”
Snr Const Parker said the investigation by Cairns Criminal Investigation Branch had been “very thorough”. Wed 18/04/18 - Tues 24/04/18
