Pacific Hino wins award
MY HUSBAND Denis Keeffe and I launched Mainie in Cairns in August 2015.
At the time, we were confident that our unique melding of authentic Aboriginal art and luxurious silk would be successful, but we were also prepared for it to take some time for us to carve out a foothold in the marketplace.
It had already taken us nearly five years to develop our business concept to launch stage and while we felt ready to begin trading, we still started cautiously with a debut fashion collection featuring just 12 authentic Aboriginal designs.
It was a great relief that despite our initial reticence, we were able to quickly secure a prominent position in the high-end travel retail sector.
Some of our first designs sold out within weeks and we were soon placing orders for more stock to meet demand from our customers.
Over the next two years, we further expanded our collection to include both men’s and women’s fashion and gift products featuring more than 30 different Aboriginal artwork designs by 24 artists from remote communities in Queens-
