5G auction scheduled

The Cairns Post - - BUSINESS -

THE 5G spectrum auction is to kick off on November 20, with the Federal Government sticking to its commitment of quickly getting the asset into telcos’ hands.

It will essentially be a twohorse race between Telstra and merger partners TPG Telecom and Vodafone Hutchison Australia, who are jointly bidding for the spectrum.

The Australian Communication and Media Authority will put 125 megahertz of available spectrum in the 3.6 gigahertz band on the block.

Each bidder is allowed to buy 60 megahertz of the spectrum in metropolitan areas and 80 megahertz in regional areas.

The Government has already set a relatively low reserve price, with the full lot priced at around $185 million.

According to the guidelines set by ACMA, the 5G spectrum licences must be allocated within 12 months of the auction.
