Filmmaker’s big win in Miami
A TOOWOOMBA filmmaker’s final university project has won an award at a prestigious Miami film festival.
Not only was Iain Fulton’s film Velvet Boulevard selected to be screened at the 3rd Annual Widescreen Film and Music Video Festival in Miami, it also took out the award for best visual effects.
Mr Fulton is back on home soil after brushing shoulders with the who’s who of the American film industry.
“I travelled all around the United States but spent a while in Florida because there were lots of events, screenings, award shows and even a yacht to attend to,” he laughed.
“When I saw the other nominees, I resigned myself to losing straight away so it was wonderful to come home with the little gold trophy.”
Mr Fulton was a stay-at-home dad until he decided to study creative media at the University of Southern Queensland. He graduated last year.
Velvet Boulevard is a crime drama set in America in 1987.
“They were impressed that I did it all by myself. A lot of the other films had a fair bit of money and post-production costs behind them but I was one guy with a computer which a lot of people in America couldn’t believe was possible,” he said.
Mr Fulton plans to film a western later this year.
“The sub-genre has been done before but not the way I will do it,” he said.
