Plans for new centres

The Chronicle - - NEWS -

A TIM Nicholls-led LNP Government will invest $40 million building two new dedicated reintegration facilities for young offenders in North Queensland and Southeast Queensland.

Mr Nicholls said the LNP’s $40 million plan would put community safety first but with a focus on reducing crime and rehabilitating young offenders.

He said the LNP would also would scrap Labor’s plan to build suburban youth bail houses at locations across the state including Townsville, Gold Coast and Logan.

“The LNP’s plan will include two new facilities (one in Gatton/Lockyer area) that will provide an additional 90 beds and hold 17 to 25-year-olds in medium security facilities,” Mr Nicholls said.

“The focus of our reintegration centres will be around vocational training and providing young prisoners with the support they need to reintegrate back into the community on release.”

LNP Corrective Services Minister Tim Mander said protecting the community was essential.

“We will put community safety first.’’
