Heritage funding welcomed

NSW Member for Murray Adrian Piccoli has welcomed 2017-18 funding of $24 000 awarded to Berrigan Shire Council under the NSW Government’s Heritage Grants Program to assist towards heritage adviser services and local heritage protection.

Mr Piccoli said looking after our heritage was everyone’s responsibi­lity and communitie­s play an important role in maintainin­g and promoting local heritage.

‘‘Our local heritage speaks to our history so it is important to protect, promote and celebrate it,’’ he said.

‘‘The grant will be used to assist in funding the services of local heritage advisers who provide knowledge to help the local community on heritage planning and also to encourage community action on the front line of heritage protection.’’

NSW Heritage Minister Gabrielle Upton said almost 220 grants were awarded across the state in consultati­on with the NSW Heritage Council.

Councils, Aboriginal organisati­ons, peak heritage organisati­ons and owners of heritage items have been awarded a share of $5.4 million in grant funding as part of the program.
