Art comes from the heart

The Cobram Courier - - NEWS - By Jenna Bishop

Local scenes and picturesque settings are the inspiration behind Barooga artist Norma Bell’s artwork.

Mrs Bell, the feature artist for the Station Gallery this month, said her art on display was based on flowers, the Murray River, birds and other bush scenes, as well as the odd nude painting.

She paints from postcards or pictures, or from her imagination.

‘‘Sometimes I go down to the river and sit and paint what’s in front of me,’’ she said.

Mrs Bell has always had an interest in art, and her talent was evident from a young age.

She received a first class commendation at London’s 1949 Royal Drawing Society Exhibition Competition for her pastel portrait, while attending Melbourne Girls Grammar.

Since then, Mrs Bell said she’d had little time to pursue her passion for art, after working as a registered nurse and then moving to a Katunga dairy farm with her late husband Dick and raising three children.

When she retired to Barooga, she picked up the paintbrushes once again, joining the Cobram and District Artists Society.

Mrs Bell said it would take her about three or four days to complete a piece, depending on the complexity.

At the moment, her favourite pieces range from a number of different settings.

‘‘I really like the birds of paradise one at the moment, and the one I’ve done of the Gold Coast, and the one of the bush cottage hut, which was taken from a photo.

‘‘I find painting really relaxing and you can put your heart and soul into it, which is really good.’’

The Station Gallery is open from 10 am to 3 pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Visitors are welcome to browse the gallery during closed hours by calling the phone numbers on the door.
