Red Cross needs vol­un­teers

State Mem­ber for Ovens Val­ley Tim McCurdy is en­cour­ag­ing lo­cal res­i­dents to con­sider be­com­ing an Aus­tralian Red Cross emer­gency ser­vices vol­un­teer.

‘‘The Aus­tralian Red Cross is now re­cruit­ing emer­gency ser­vices vol­un­teers so it’s a great time for peo­ple to at­tend a lo­cal in­for­ma­tion ses­sion to find out what is in­volved,’’ Mr McCurdy said.

‘‘Vol­un­teers are trained to pro­vide sup­port in the lo­cal area, through­out Vic­to­ria and po­ten­tially Aus­tralia-wide in times of na­tional emer­gen­cies.’’

Mr McCurdy said Red Cross vol­un­teers in emer­gency ser­vices roles not only help peo­ple who have ex­pe­ri­enced a dis­as­ter but also help them pre­pare be­fore a dis­as­ter strikes and re­cover af­ter­wards.

‘‘Red Cross emer­gency ser­vice vol­un­teers are best known for help­ing peo­ple dur­ing a dis­as­ter — they might greet peo­ple at evac­u­a­tion cen­tres, go door-to-door in com­mu­ni­ties fol­low­ing a flood or fire to check how peo­ple are cop­ing or reg­is­ter peo­ple to help them find fam­ily and friends,’’ he said.

‘‘Emer­gency ser­vices vol­un­teers are also es­sen­tial in help­ing com­mu­ni­ties pre­pare for emer­gen­cies and with re­cov­ery af­ter a dis­as­ter has passed, help­ing run com­mu­nity projects and sup­port­ing peo­ple with their heal­ing process.’’

In­for­ma­tion ses­sions for those in­ter­ested in vol­un­teer­ing will be held in Shepparton and Nu­murkah.

The in­for­ma­tion ses­sions will be held at Legacy House, 20 Ed­ward St, Shepparton on Satur­day, Oc­to­ber 28 at 10 am and Mon­day, Oc­to­ber 30 at 7.30 pm.

An in­for­ma­tion ses­sion will be held in Nu­murkah on Satur­day, Oc­to­ber 28 at 1 pm at the Se­nior Cit­i­zens Club, 38 McCaskill St.
