Goulburn Murray wins at last
An impressive Goulburn Murray outfit has broken a 37-year drought and won the division one Victorian Country Week golfing title.
The women’s team managed to snatch victory away from Golf Peninsula’s grasp on the final hole of the final match, when 18-year-old Steffi Vogel was the hero of the day with the winning shot.
The men’s team had a taste of success too, winning the division two title and securing promotion to division one next year.
The men’s team won all four of its matches, giving it a 4-4 score in the Plate division.
The team defeated Murray Darling, which registered only one win from its four matches.
The ladies competed in a three-day tournament played across various metropolitan clubs.
The teams were selected from players in each of the 15 country districts across Victoria.
Steffi Vogel and Rowena Wallace represented Cobram-Barooga, while Tracey Clouston, Pauline Davies and Nola Dalton represented Numurkah.
Vogel said she had never felt more nervous when the hopes of the team fell squarely on her shoulders at the final hole.
‘‘We weren’t expecting to win. We just wanted to stay in division one,’’ she said.
‘‘It was a great team effort where everyone contributed. If everyone didn’t win early matches we wouldn’t have been able to take the title.
‘‘It was a really great feeling to break the 37-year drought.’’
