Birdhouse wins prize

The Cobram Courier - - NEWS -

Birds will be sleeping in style thanks to the handiwork of Cobram and District Specialist School students, who built an award-winning birdhouse for a competition held by Rich Glen Olive Oil Estate.

The birdhouse’s tile and glass mosaic design wowed the judges, who awarded it first prize out of five other birdhouses built by students from St Joseph’s in Cobram, Yarrawonga P-4 and Yarrawonga College P-12.

The students from the independent living skills group were awarded milkshake vouchers for their craftsmanship and the school received a cheque for $500.

School principal Leah Willis said the money would fund other school projects to teach the students practical skills.

‘‘The students had so much fun working with the wood and the mosaics,’’ she said.

‘‘I want to thank Rich Glen for their generosity and their quite substantial prize.’’

Rich Glen owner Rosalind Vodusek said the birdhouse would make a colourful addition to her olive farm.

‘‘We love all the colours and patterns the students made,’’ she said.

‘‘The birds are loving it, too. We put some bird seed in there and the birds have started making it their home.

‘‘All of the students have done fantastic work and showed great teamwork.’’

This was the third crafting competition held by the farm, with the previous years’ themes being wind chimes and scarecrows.

Rich Glen owner Damian Vodusek said the competitions had been a great success and would continue.

‘‘The competition is all about putting something back into the community, the schools and the art and craft centres,’’ he said.

‘‘We’d like to thank all the schools that participated for their great work.’’
