Stillards get creative
Families have gotten into the competitive spirit for the Cobram Show, which will kick off on Saturday at the showgrounds in Bank St.
The Stillards will be one of the families showing off their intergenerational talent at the art and craft pavilion.
Grace Stillard will be entering the photography competition for the first time with a picture she took of her dad in the spur of a moment.
‘‘We were on holidays and it was a really nice spot,’’ she said.
Older sister Bella will be showing off her craftsmanship in the woodwork section with a cabinet she made for a school project.
‘‘I cut the wood, measured it, sanded it, painted it, built it, and I think it looks good,’’ she said.
Little brother Sam will be showing off a police station and gaol cell made from Lego he got for his birthday.
Belinda Stillard is the matriarch of the talented family, but she said her children’s creativity must have come from their father.
‘‘They definitely don’t get it from me,’’ she said.
The humble Mrs Stillard said the family went to the Cobram Show every year and the kids had entered competitions ever since they started kindergarten.
Her husband Chris will also be throwing his chef’s hat into the ring for the cooking competition.
‘‘My husband and sister-in-law have been competing against each other for years,’’ Mrs Stillard said.
The source of the rivalry is the family tomato sauce recipe, which is a carefully-guarded secret.
‘‘Annette’s the champion and Chris just wants to knock her off her pedestal,’’ Mrs Stillard said.
Mrs Stillard said that while creativity did not necessarily run in the family, competitiveness certainly did.
Other equally competitive families will be coming, with students from all local primary and secondary schools taking part in the show this Saturday and Sunday.
The kindergarten students will put up a Halloween-themed display and there will be competitions for Lego, woodwork, metalwork, needlework and more.
There will also be cakes, preserves, jams and vegetables grown in the local school gardens.
