Oh my cod! A whole con­fer­ence on our favourite na­tive fish

Recre­ational an­glers can learn about Vic­to­ria’s Mur­ray cod fish­eries and how to im­prove their own fish­ing success at the sec­ond an­nual Cod­fer­ence in Shep­par­ton on Sun­day, De­cem­ber 10.

Vic­to­rian Fish­eries Au­thor­ity chief ex­ec­u­tive Travis Dowl­ing said the free event was part of the Vic­to­rian Gov­ern­ment’s Tar­get One Mil­lion plan for recre­ational fish­ing.

Fish­ing guru and TV per­son­al­ity Steve Star­ling will present the key­note ad­dress on the na­tive fish rev­o­lu­tion and re­flect on his per­sonal jour­ney with our most iconic na­tive fish, the Mur­ray cod.

To help an­glers im­prove their own fish­ing skills and knowl­edge, speak­ers will in­clude Rob­bie Alexan­der on the Ovens River, John Cahill on cod cul­ture and Marc Ainsworth on tech­niques to im­prove catch rates in rivers and lakes.

There will also be in­for­ma­tion about other pop­u­lar na­tive species, such as golden perch. Pre­sen­ta­tions will in­clude: ● Flag­ship na­tive fish­eries and how we got there. ● Record na­tive fish stock­ing. ● How fish­ing li­cence fees con­trib­ute. ● Na­tive fish habi­tat. ● Na­tive fish pop­u­la­tion sur­veys across 10 rivers.

The event builds on the success of last year’s in­au­gu­ral Cod­fer­ence and the Talk Wild Trout con­fer­ence, which will be held in Mans­field for the third con­sec­u­tive year on Novem­ber 11.

The free Cod­fer­ence will be held at the East­bank Cen­tre, 70 Wels­ford St, Shep­par­ton, from 9 am to 4 pm on Sun­day, De­cem­ber 10. Tea, cof­fee and lunch will be pro­vided.
