Mentors share their music

The Cobram Courier - - NEWS -

Teachers have become students once more at Cobram Primary School as part of the National Music Mentor Program.

The pilot program pairs a music mentor with a general teacher to build their skills and confidence in teaching music.

Music mentor Gabrielle Ryan said she hoped to spread her love of music to both teachers and students.

‘‘Music is essential to life and development,’’ Ms Ryan said.

‘‘It teaches everything: reading, writing, literacy and social development.’’

The lessons bring music into the classroom with singing, dancing and a colourful variety of instruments.

Cobram Primary Prep teacher Ann Carmichael has been learning from Ms Ryan for the past 16 weeks and said she had learned alongside her students.

‘‘We’ve learnt a lot and the children enjoy the rhythm and rhyme and it helps them expand their language and understanding of syllables and words,’’ Ms Carmichael said.

‘‘In Prep everything is a lot of fun. Every new learning step is a good one.’’

The program is being held in five towns in Victoria and will be rolled out to other towns if the pilot is considered successful.
