Great start before Bushrangers sink to narrow loss

The Murray Bushrangers’ girls’ side travelled to RAMS Arena in Craigieburn for their round seven TAC Cup match against GWV Rebels.

With a different line-up, it was great to see the Bushrangers adapt well and get off to a great start with goals to debutant Ella Jones and Kate Adams to go into the quarter-time break trailing the Rebels by five points.

Chelsea Knight’s return into the middle helped lift her teammates and she led by example with her second and third efforts, ferocious tackling and spoils.

The Bushrangers’ third goal came late in the second from Charli Boschetti, with the defensive efforts of youngsters Zali Spencer, Hayley Doohan and Emily Nicholson keeping the margin the same as the first going into the main break.

Grace Egan started the third quarter with a powerful tackle and Millie Brown continued her domination, breaking the lines, with Kate Adams and Claudia McKimmie laying numerous tackles and providing options up forward.

The Rebels rebounded every missed opportunity from the Bushrangerss and could’ve put the game out of reach by three-quartertime, but inaccurate kicking gave the Bushrangers a glimmer of hope with one quarter to go and only two goals in it.

Claudia McKimmie and Chelsea Knight continued their ruthless tackling, with Tamara Smith weaving in and around her opponent, going forward at every opportunity.

Rebecca Webster fended off her opponent and kicked truly on the run from 40 m for the Bushies only goal in the final term, but it wasn’t quite enough as the Rebels outclassed the Bushrangers with their speed and skill to come away with a six-point victory.

Saturday sees the Murray Bushrangers travel to Warrawee Park, Oakleigh for their round eight clash against Eastern Rangers.
