Stu­dents en­joy new lan­guage

Thou­sands of chil­dren will have the chance to learn an­other lan­guage at kinder­garten through a Vic­to­rian Govern­ment ini­tia­tive.

Co­bram and dis­trict par­ents, teach­ers, ser­vice man­agers and those in kinder­garten com­mu­ni­ties are en­cour­aged to join the con­ver­sa­tion and at­tend in­for­ma­tion ses­sions.

Trikki Kidz early learn­ing group started teach­ing Ital­ian this year and teacher Jayne Alle­mand said re­sponse from the stu­dents was en­cour­ag­ing.

‘‘The kids have been lap­ping it up,’’ she said.

‘‘One of our teach­ers is Ital­ian and be­gan teach­ing it to stu­dents in April.

‘‘It’s al­ways good for them to learn about other cul­tures and we have a large Ital­ian com­mu­nity in Co­bram and dis­trict.’’

Three-hour weekly lan­guage ses­sions will be de­liv­ered in 120 kinders next year and a fur­ther 10 ser­vices will be­come bilin­gual, where chil­dren will ben­e­fit from up to half of pro­grams be­ing of­fered in an­other lan­guage.

In­for­ma­tion ses­sions will run across Vic­to­ria in the next two weeks and cover how the pro­gram will work, fund­ing el­i­gi­bil­ity and the ex­pres­sion of in­ter­est process for those kinder­gartens keen to ap­ply.
