New beef class for 2018 show
This year’s Cobram Show will have something for everyone — and then some.
The latest addition is to the beef competition: an un-led section of the carcase competition which is open to all.
Cobram Show treasurer Caitlin Chester spearheaded the competition and said it would open up more opportunities for locals.
‘‘Local stock agents, or anyone that feeds, can enter,’’ she said.
‘‘There’s no need to show the animals as it’s un-led and the animals will be sent off with the best carcase winning.’’
Ms Chester said she was proud to have the competition in Cobram, where she launched her career.
‘‘To be exhibiting somewhere like Cobram gives you that experience from such a young age, and be able to head overseas because of that was amazing,’’ she said.
Returning from a trip to the United States in August, Ms Chester was lucky enough to score a scholarship as a Matthew George Young Stockman Award recipient.
‘‘I was showing carcase cattle at the Melbourne Show and there was the opportunity to apply for the scholarship and so I decided to,’’ she said.
Open to anyone aged 18 to 25, the scholarship gives winners the chance to travel overseas to the destination of their choice and tour local industry.
‘‘I chose the US and spent three months in Texas for a look at their beef industry,’’ Ms Chester said.
‘‘As a ruminant nutritionist it was interesting to have a look at meat processing plants, vitamin and mineral processing, stud operations and feedlots in the US.
‘‘I spent one week with a family at their ranch and moved around to different ranches for 12 weeks.’’
Ms Chester said she was intrigued to see the workings of the industry in a foreign market — and perceptions about our market.
‘‘One of the things which stood out to me was that the Australian beef industry is doing a lot better than they give it credit for,’’ she said.
‘‘A lot (of people in the US) didn’t realise Australia was such a major exporter to China.’’
