Arts for region

Moira Arts & Culture Inc. can apply for a grant under the Small Regional Presenters program.

Victorian Creative Industries Minister Martin Foley on Friday announced more than $60 000 was available to help small communities bring arts to their area.

MAC Inc. treasurer Lou Hamon said the arts group had applied for Small Regional Presenters grants in the past and would look to do so again if possible.

‘‘These grants would enable Moira Arts & Culture Inc. to bring high quality professional performances to Moira Shire, enabling the community to enjoy the arts without having to travel to larger metro or regional centre’s,’’ he said.

Last year, MAC Inc. received $3350 for four performances in the Cafe Culture Series — I Viaggiatori, Sonido Flamenco, Bush Gothic and The Wikimen.

The program was created to increase the quality and variety of cultural events and activities in small regional towns and to give local creative groups the chance to program shows which resonate with local audiences.

Unlike a traditional touring model, which supports artists to take their work on the road, the program supports venues or presenters who are ‘on the ground’ to attract shows to their area.
