Cobram Village moving forward and you are invited to see plans

The Cobram Courier - - FRONT PAGE - By Patrick Tansey

After a period of stagnation, Cobram Village is moving forward, with the Victorian Government agreeing to display plans for the proposed $40 million neighbourhood retail centre for public comment.

The plans are on display at Moira Shire Council offices and website, as well as Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s website.

‘‘We are excited that the project is moving forward and encourage the community to get behind us and show their support for the new centre by making submissions to council,’’ Tipalea Partners chief executive Scott Spanton said

‘‘If you think more competition is good for Cobram, now is the time to make sure you tell council and the government by writing a short submission in support of Cobram Village by email or post, but remember to include your name and contact details or it may not count,’’ he said

Mr Spanton said the community’s involvement in the project so far reaffirmed people wanted it to come to fruition.

‘‘We have had such high levels of support since announcing our intent to develop Cobram Village. We have more than 1800 followers on Facebook and have also had high levels of attendance at our community meetings and engagement in our survey,’’ he said.

The survey profiled the shopping habits of people and asked for feedback on what was needed for the future of retail in Cobram

Mr Spanton said more than 700 people completed the online survey.

The survey found while 80 per cent of respondents did their weekly grocery shop at Woolworths and IGA, 80 to 90 per cent of people would shop at Coles or Aldi if the alternatives were presented.

Mr Spanton was hopeful of more public support for the project now it is getting down to the ‘‘nitty gritty’’ stage.

‘‘We hope the community will continue to show its support with submissions of the plans on exhibition, as that really helps the planning process for us,’’ he said.

Cobram Village will target national retailers to bring lower prices for everyday shopping and significantly boost local employment.

It will create more than 200 construction jobs and a further 200 ongoing local jobs once the centre opened.

The proposed centre includes a full-line supermarket, a smaller secondary grocery store, a ‘minimajor’ retailer, a medical centre and 11 specialty stores and parking for more than 430 cars.

● The closing date for submissions is December 6. Submissions must be sent via email to info@moira.vic.gov.au and include your name and contact details or via mail to Moira Shire Council at PO Box 578, Cobram 3644.
