Championship coup for Yarrawonga
In a coup for the Yarrawonga community, the Victorian Barefoot Waterski Club has received funding from the Victorian Government to host the 2019 Australia Barefoot Waterski National Championships.
Member for Northern Victoria, Mark Gepp announced the event would be on March 11 to 17 supported by the government’s Significant Sporting Events Program.
The national championships include junior, open and senior divisions, with competitors progressing from local events and state championships.
The championships are a pathway for selection to compete in the World Championships in Sydney in 2020.
Mr Gepp said the event would have a huge economic and social impact on the town and help put Yarrawonga and the Moira region on the map.
‘‘The Victorian Government is proud to bring the best barefoot water-skiers to Yarrawonga. It gives us the opportunity to showcase our wonderful facilities and location to the rest of Australia,’’ he said.
The $17.7 million Significant Sporting Events Program supports organisations to deliver national or international sporting events in focus or have regional significance and are recognised by a relevant sporting body.
More than 300 events have been funded through the government’s the program, with more than half held in regional Victoria.
The events bring competitors, officials and supporters to our communities and stimulate the local economy.
