I WAS checking the surf at Diggers and noticed a man struggling in a strong rip at the north end of the beach. He started to raise his hand in distress and began to go under the water. As I was fully clothed I ran down to the water’s edge, unsure of what to do and saw hardly anyone on the beach except for a guy with a metal detector. He sprang into action, jumping into the water to save him. I want to give a shout to that awesome Aussie bloke for saving a man’s life. Maddey Leigh TO those responsible for forcing people to pay to park at any hospital. I recently had to use the boom gate pay machine at Coffs Harbour Campus on a dark, rainy night and found it extremely difficult and frustrating. The instructions cannot be read under poor conditions and my ticket became saturated, as did my arm and car interior. Having to pay to visit the sick or dying is bad enough, but not providing decent cover over the money machine is not on. John Thomson

They approved 3 consecutive rate increases 19.1% excluding revaluations. Not 6%
It was to be expected but now you know why ratepayers have become totally disillusioned with the process and intolerant with the insouciant powers that be.
After reading the IPART responses it is clear to us that they are compulsive in their dishonesty in saying that this Council met the pathetically weak criteria when as was demonstrated in our submission they clearly did not meet the criteria. From the outset the criteria and terms of reference set by the Office of Local Government were established so as to procure a particular outcome, meaning that it is a predetermined rubber stamp, tick the box process regardless of community opposition, reasonableness, willingness and capacity to pay, they pay lip service to these issues but have no intention of genuine due consideration or representation of the ratepayer community. This is simply an unconstitutional back door procedure to increase taxation without mandate. IPART is a Trojan horse for back door taxation that is used by political parties to distance themselves from these very unpopular cost of living increases.
From our perspective the SRV IPART process is totally corrupt, it is not independent, and it has absolutely nothing to do with democracy as none of those Councillors ran on a platform of endless large and cumulative rate rises. It is an absolute waste of time participating with submissions to Councils or IPART to represent community concern because they will ignore the community every time. The Bellingen Shire Ratepayers Association is now calling for the resignation of Gabrielle Upton and the three Chair positions of IPART as they are running a fixed non independent sham process to approve undemocratic backdoor taxation without mandate and directly against the will of the people. Special Rate Variations are now consistently being used to circumvent the protective provisions of rate pegging a policy which is very important for people on fixed and minimum incomes. In effect rate pegging has now been abandoned in NSW in order to perpetuate unfit and incompetent councils that are incapable of living within their means. This is the opinion of Bruce Cleary Vice President of the Bellingen Shire Ratepayers Association
