MATURITY ON THE BEAT

The Courier-Mail - Career One - - Job Focus -

TEN per cent growth in police numbers, or about 5000 new jobs, is forecast by the Employment Department in the next five years.

The average salary is $70,000 but can range between $41,000 and $90,000 depending on the role and hours.

Life experience is a key requirement for police forces, which encourage applications from experienced workers. It is such an important criteria that school-leaver applicants must have work-related experience outside of school.

Police officers need to deal with unexpected situations and with a wide variety of people in their day-to-day tasks, so maturity is an asset.

Workers also are paid during their training.
