FOR staff at steel pipe company Austube Mills’ Acacia Ridge plant, motivation and engagement comes from the other side of the world.

Site operations manager Darren Newbegin was looking for a way to encourage his 88 workers when he stumbled across a speech on YouTube by American football coach Joe Headen. It was called Hold the Rope and promoted teamwork and engagement.

He developed a leadership session around the Hold the Rope concept and had signs made up with the slogan. “It’s lifted the performance on site in safety, quality of our product to our customer, performance of the plant and delivery performance,” he says.

“It’s lifted the mood of the place as well and people have a sense of autonomy.”

Newbegin ended up contacting Headen about the effect of his speech in Australia and in turn the coach will be talking about Austube Mills at a forum in the US.
