PRICE The baseline of $93,900 is up by nearly $10,000 and only the 530d has had a genuine price cut. BMW justifies the extra cost — nearly $20,000 on the 540i — by citing between $15,000 and $20,000 in extra value. TECHNOLOGY Everything from the flagship 7 Series moves across, with five ways — from buttons to gestures and speech — to control the functions. Tech includes wireless phone charging and the ability to remotely park the car using the smart key. PERFORMCANCE Engines have been updated, with the 540i taking the 3.0-litre turbo six from the 7 Series. With rear-wheel drive, eight-speed auto and strong torque, there is plenty of overtaking punch. DRIVING The 5 Series is still the most eager driving companion in its class. The sweet spot is the 530i, with Dynamic Damper Control that helps with wheel control and steering, removing the skittish feel from the basic 520d. DESIGN The design is not remotely adventurous but there is some deft detailing and the cabin is finished like a luxury hotel. Smart stuff includes active flaps in the grille to cut drag without compromising cooling.
