THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX
Leaders in the retirement and aged care sector were among those recognised at a recent awards ceremony in Brisbane.
RV Homebase Fraser Coast won the Seniors Living category at the 2017 UDIA Queensland awards, going on to take out one of the most coveted top gongs – the CEO’s award.
The development was described as a “new model of seniors living in Australia” as it had been specifically designed for residents with large RVs who travel regularly.
“Given residents are away for a large part of the year, the houses are designed to be low maintenance and the extensive landscaping is maintained by management,” the judges said.
“The site also features a community building, tennis court, bowling green, pool, craft room, cinema and roofed gathering space.”
The judges said RV Homebase Fraser Coast had made a brave but “successful” decision choosing a site away from the coastal locations.
Woombye Aged Care Facility by Woombye Care Inc won the Residential Care category, beating two other finalists.
The integration of new structures and facilities with the existing village elements were acknowledged by the judges, as was the focus on dementia design, ageing in place, and community outreach services.
“With higher staffing ratios than most, and a policy of taking 75 per cent of residents with no other assets, the project represents not only a quality development but an intense commitment to residents and their care,” the judges noted. Finally, The Social Buttons, an initiative of BHC’s Caggara House, took out the Wildcard category, and was recognised for providing an innovative way to interact and engage with its community. The design creates a unique interface that takes the term “with a simple click of a button” to a new level.
Giant, colourful, 3-dimensional buttons allow residents to choose social events from a list of activities, followed by the location, and a day of the week or time for the activity.
