WHAT IT’S GOT Seven airbags, comprehensive safety kit. Active Bonnet automatically lifts the rear edge of the bonnet in a pedestrian impact. Space-saver spare, automatic parking (parallel and reverse), tyre pressure monitor, rear camera with multi-angle views and dynamic guidelines, eight-inch infotainment touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, tri-zone aircon, folding tables on the front seat backs, roof console and drawers under the front seats. WHAT IT HASN’T Power tailgate, adjustable lumbar support for driver’s seat, adaptive suspension, keyless entry and start. OWNERSHIP Servicing costs $2850 over five years/75,000km, intervals of 12 months/15,000km. WHAT WE LIKED It’s better than some $60K Euro SUVs. Built like a small tank. Kid carrier par excellence, with A-grade safety, practicality and convenience in a spacious, comfortable package. Confident, enjoyable handling, on dirt roads too thanks to all-wheel drive. Smooth, quiet, fuel-efficient turbo diesel. WHAT WE DIDN’T Quick, it’s not. Firm, lumpy ride. Slightly imprecise steering. Maximum towing weight claim is absurd. Infotainment requires a session with the owner’s manual to nut out. VWs can still have reliability issues.
